Blurb :

At age twenty-three, Alex has had a hard life. His parents died when he was quite young, leaving his grandparents to raise him. Right before his high school graduation, his grandparents passed on too, leaving him all alone.

After losing everyone he's ever loved, Alex turns to the streets in a self-destructive pattern until he finally ends up in Springhill, where he tries to make a new life for himself.

Clair’s childhood was normal until age thirteen, when her father left the family and she never heard from him again. Consequently, her mother went into a deep depression, forcing Clair to grow up quickly.

After finishing high school, Clair’s heartache over her father’s absence as well as her unbearable mother drive her to strike out on her own. But having nowhere to go and no family to speak of, Clair wanders aimlessly from town to town, homeless, and without purpose. Looking for work wherever she goes and living hand to mouth on the streets is tough, Clair discovers, but living with her mother is worse.

Now twenty-one years old, Clair has found her way to the last place she and her family took their final vacation as a family--Springhill. While in town, she crosses paths with Alex and their ensuing relationship grows faster than expected. Soon Clair wonders if coming back to Springhill and meeting Alex was the best decision or the worst decision she ever made.

About the Author:

Loni Flowers lives in Eastern North Carolina with her husband; two wild toddlers, who never slow down for a second; and three couch-potato dogs, who only raise an eye when foods around. She spends her days working full-time for a well-known bank. When she's not playing on the internet or chatting on Twitter or Facebook, she spends her free time with friends and family waiting for the next big idea strike.

She enjoys reading most anything, but is a sucker for a good romance story. Contemporary romance is her writing genre of choice but isn't opposed to writing something different should an excellent idea hit.

Some of her favorite authors include: L.J. Kentowski, Stefne Miller, Cassandra Clare, J.K. Rowling, and Karen Marie Moning, Nicholas Sparks, Jodi Picoult... just to name a few.

Not knowing who to trust: her boss, her slithery familiar, or her own Bump of Direction, she has to find her personal power by relying on herself, her real world failures, and her sense of the absurd, to survive in this imaginary garden with real trolls in it so that her clients get their happily ever after. The girl stared at Maven for a moment. She held up her fingers and started counting. "I just want to have (one) the fabulous, romantic evening with (two) the beautiful clothes and (three) the lovely music and (four) the elegant food I didn't have to cook." Wistful hope shone on her face even behind the calculations of exactly what kinds of fun girls just want to have. She stuck out her thumb and added, "I was very careful." "You asked for it." Maven wondered how a fairy godmother cast her spell. She hoped the wand would work, but in a dream, what could go wrong? "I will provide the clothes and the coach and the whole kit, cat and caboodle. If you like what you see, then go for the prince and make yourself happy. If not, then come back home and decide what you want. You have until midnight before it all goes away. At the twelfth bong: busted." "I'm ready." The girl closed her eyes, held her breath, and stood very still. How to grant a wish? The Bump suggested bopping the girl over the head, preferably with a broom handle. Maven swished the wand, but nothing happened. There was a song in the movie, but she couldn't remember how it went. "Boopbetty Boopbetty Do!" The girl opened her eyes again. "What? Do you need something for the magic...mice? A pumpkin?" "Bring them on." The girl ought to wash her face, too. But if Maven had magic for horses and coaches, a bath should be no sweat. Maven never cast a spell before, but she'd written affirmations, meditations and invocations. She'd soaked her head and sunk her bankbook in all flavors of Manifest your Mojo workshops trying to make some sense of her life. Maybe they'd work if she did them for someone else. "I don't have a pumpkin, and there aren't any mice in the trap," Ashleigh wailed. "Quit wailing," Maven said. "What do you have?" Ashleigh's eyes got wider, and her lip trembled. More tears made clean tracks down her face. "Just get something big for a carriage, something to pull it, and something to drive." Maven held her wand on one hip and scratched her head. "You're running out of time." While the girl went scrounging, Maven visualized a castle, grand courtiers, music, food, dancing, and flowers: Hollywood prom night on steroids. The girl came back carrying a cabbage and something wiggling around in a sack, which they took outside. Maven waved the wand, drawing circles of sparkles around the cabbage. She invoked all the major credit cards, those being the most magical words she knew. With a flash of sparkles like fourth of July fireworks, the cabbage swelled to the size of an SUV and sprouted platinum wheels, a tailgate, a coachman's seat and a candle-lit lantern, all done up in shades of silver and celadon. Maven swirled more sparkles around the sack, which opened to reveal two lizards. They stretched and twisted into two handsome footmen, each gorgeous enough to pose on the cover of any bodice ripper, dressed in green and white satin. Maven grinned. If the job was this easy, she'd be all over it like stink on a hog. "What about my horses? The carriage can't pull itself," Ashleigh cried. "What else can we use?" More welling, trembling and quivering. Maven noticed the kitchen was not as clean as the storybooks always implied. "Let's go back into the kitchen. Open a cabinet door, or pick up something off the floor." Obedient to the end, the Ashleigh gingerly lifted the edge of a rug. Out ran a couple of cockroaches. Maven zapped them, transforming them into ponies. She whistled, and the lizard coachmen came to get the ponies and hitch them up. A couple of cabinets, a broom closet and a pantry later, four black ponies, like an ebony mule team complete with white ostrich plumes above their forelocks, were hitched to the cabbage. Maven took another deep breath and flicked her wand over the girl, showering her with sparks. The ragged clothes disappeared just before they began to smolder—then the dirt vanished. Like the girl on the half-shell, Ashleigh stood there shivering and trying to cover herself while the former lizards leered and grinned. "You must be new at this," Ashleigh cried. "Concentrate! I've got to get to the ball!" Maven flicked and swirled, shouted the magic words again. Nothing. An image of a sneer from her fourth grade teacher appeared in Maven's brain, her personal icon of falling short. Maven gritted her teeth, worked her jaw side to side, and invoked her redneck heritage with all the powers of Chaos. "Y'all watch this." She twirled her wand above her head and snapped it like a whip toward the girl, stomping the ground in follow through. From a mist of sparkles and smoke, a goddess emerged, floating in a landscape of shimmering silk, sprinkled with diamonds like sesame seeds on a bun. Her hair twined around her head like kudzu with fragrant flower clusters sprouting over one ear. Diamond earrings dripped from her earlobes. She tottered in four-inch glass stilettos. Ashleigh turned once each way to see the flow of the skirt. She wobbled a bit in the shoes, but tiptoed to Maven. "This is more like it!" One of the former lizards bowed to his lady and helped her into the carriage. Then he leapt to the silver tailgate. The other scurried up to the coachman's seat without so much as a smirk. Maven waved as the cabbage drove away. "Have fun, now, and remember what I said." As the cabbage disappeared down the street, she grinned. Fairy godmothering. Who'd have thought to wish for that? Book Review of Pleasant Lake

Book Review of Pleasant Lake

Pleasant Lake P.D.

Blurb :
Alexandria Moreno, parking enforcement officer for the serene town of Pleasant Lake, has signed on with the FBI to nail a gorgeous suspected criminal, Miguel Diaz, who’s passing himself off as a legitimate businessman. Alex’s assignment is to use her feminine wiles, of which she has few, to infiltrate Diaz’s world and find some evidence for a conviction.
To complicate matters, she’s teamed up with Detective Roman Plow, who is her ex-boyfriend, though the FBI doesn’t know it. As they focus on retaliating for past wrongs, real and imagined, their smoldering love/hate relationship brews. They’re not exactly an ideal team.
With her bumbling nature, a steamer trunk full of emotional baggage, and no investigating skills, Alex spends most of her time reminding herself that the tall, dark, and handsome Miguel Diaz is not her real boyfriend and struggling to keep from falling into his bed. As she tries to dig up dirt on her undercover lover, the steamy investigation leads to a fight for her life. But who is behind the attacks?

About the Author:

Kelly Fitzpatrick is a multi-award-winning writer of romance and a Golden Heart® finalist. She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, two dogs, and a Russian tortoise named Ivan.

Book Review:

Ribald humor and twisted romance make this a great read.  Alex is the Parking Enforcement Officer for the Pleasant Town police department.  Or as her ex-boyfriend, and general womanizer, calls her the meter-maid.  That is until the FBI taps her to go undercover and snoop on possible mob-boss Miguel.  But things may not be exactly how they seem, and Alex can’t stop tripping over herself long enough to collect evidence.

Funny, at times sad, but mostly very funny story, with a wickedly warped ribald humor.  A definite good read.  I give this story 4.5 out of 5 clouds.

Excerpt:

There was nothing left of the life she had known.
Her slender arm wrapped around the little boy’s shoulder and pulled him closer to his side. She could feel his slight trembling and wished more than anything that she could take   his sadness. They were alone in the world. They had each other and she prayed that would be enough for them both.
They stood and listened as the priest gave the final blessing and the caskets were lowered into the ground. It wasn’t something anyone should witness, but she needed the closure. She needed to know that it was over. ‘A very sad affair’ everyone called it for it wasn’t every day that a man murdered his wife and then shot himself. It wasn’t healthy to think on the possible reasons why, but she couldn’t seem to help herself. She had truly believed that they had been a happy family. One of the wealthiest in New Orleans and one of the most respected and sought out for social gatherings. The truth however, was revealed with her father’s death. No one would speak of it to them of course, but the lawyer had made it quite clear.
They were penniless.

Book Review:

This book combines the best of the romance genre, mystery, and family drama.  Isabelle loses her parents, her home, and her family fortune all in one tragic murder/suicide and is left with only her 5 year old brother.  She accepts a job as a schoolteacher about as far from the city life in New Orleans as you can get, on the frontier in Montana.  There she meets the second Gallagher, who is immediately drawn to her.  However, Isabelle plans to never marry, until she is forced to do so in order to keep custody of her brother.

Can a marriage of convenience grow into a true and lasting love?  Will the return of an enemy to the Gallagher family destroy the little chance they have?  Why is Hunter really back?  If you read book one in the Gallagher series you know that some of these issues are on-going from book 1.  However, book 2 can be read as a stand-alone as the continuing issues are explained enough for the book to make sense and still be a good read.

I give this book 4 out of 5 clouds.

Book Review:

Pam’s life was good and she was happily married until she gets a phone call that will change her life.  Her husband has died on the train on the way home from working in the city.  Unfortunately, as she grieves for the loss of her husband, two other women are also grieving the loss of their love.  Sandra, his co-worker and beneficiary at work, is pregnant with his child.  Marie, already has a young child, who is now fatherless.

This is a sad story about how Pam and these two women bond over the loss of their love and the father of their children.  Pam, the legitimate wife, was totally unaware of the rest of the women, except that they have come to the house for weekend visits as friends and co-workers of her husband.

The book draws you in and keeps you interested, except that I wanted to slap Pam at times.  She was too poised, too forgiving, and accepting.  Personally I would have dug him up and castrated him, then had him cremated and his ashes scattered somewhere very far away.  But then again, I would be a little vengeful too.  Pam is lost without her husband, and confused by all these new revelations.  She’s a little too controlled for me.

I knew a lady who found out her husband cheated on her after his death and burial.  I don’t know that this story is true, but it is in character for her and I rather hope it’s true.  When she found out he had cheated on her, she had him exhumed from the family plot and buried elsewhere.  That’s the spirit I want to see from Pam, not this banal acceptance.

Stay tuned for more on this series.  For this book alone I give 3.5 out of 5 clouds.  I was sweet and an easy read, but I truly expected more anger and vengeance.  Just a little too nice for me..

Giveaway and Book Review of Kentucky Green

Book Review of Kentucky Green Sponsored by Innovative Book Tours

Blurb :

April Williamson’s heart calls her across the frontier, but only one man—a handsome army scout with a tormented past—can get her safely to freedom.

Synopsis: Daniel McKenzie was an army scout—quiet, capable, handsome…and utterly unwilling to be the trail guide April Williamson needed to reach Kentucky. The Indian attack at Blue Licks was but one bitter taste of the American frontier, a massacre that had taken her father just as cholera had taken her mother. But April would not give up on her dream. At journey’s end was independence, and nothing would stand in her way.

The young widow was beautiful and determined, but the months of travel involved in her plan would be too hard. Without the general’s order Dan would have told any woman no, but April especially. His secret would destroy her—or she might destroy him. April’s kiss was like the country itself. Restless and sweet, it promised a love that denied every boundary and looked only to freedom and the future.

Bio: Terry Irene Blain was lucky enough to grow up in a large Mid-western family with a rich oral tradition. As a child she heard stories of ancestors’ adventures with Indians, wildlife, weather and frontier life in general, so she naturally gravitated to the study of history and completed a BA and MA then taught the subject at the college level. Married to a sailor, now retired, she’s had the chance to live in various parts of the U.S. and has traveled to Hong Kong, Australia, England and Scotland.

“My degrees and my teaching experience make me a natural to write historical romance. Writing historical romance gives me the opportunity to pass on stories of who we are and where we come from while exploring the relationship between men and women. What could be more exciting than that?”

Book Review:
During this time period it was considered a bad thing to have American Indian heritage, no matter how little.  Dan’s father was half Indian, making Dan ¼ Indian.  To some people that makes him less of a person.  The only time it bothers him is when he fears that April will fear him.  April’s father was killed in an Indian attack when she was younger.

This is a lovely romance set during the initial westward expansion.  It not only has your traditional romance items, but also explores the tensions between the Indians and the settlers.

I give this story 4 out of 5 clouds.
