Sharp Change
By Milly Taiden
Black Meadows Pack – Book 1
Genre: Paranormal Erotic Romance
Publisher: Etopia Press
Word Count:  39,232

Blurb :

Thoughts of Chase, the Alpha of the Black Meadows pack, made her heart torpedo in her chest and rockets go off in her stomach. The better-than-a-sundae delicious-looking man with golden brown skin, enough muscles he could share them with his friends and still have left over, turned her to a puddle of goo.

The man had so much sex appeal her girl parts were ready to lift a white flag in surrender just by looking at him, even thinking of him made her tongue wag. Looking at him was like viewing a shot of your favorite dessert and knowing you couldn’t get your hands on it.

Most writers will tell you that a book is NOT written in a day. We sometimes have this awesome idea in our heads and just start writing to get it on paper. I may start a book before I even write the outline. That’s how badly I want to write. So sometimes mistakes happen.
One of the mistakes I made through Sharp Change (I noticed this BEFORE I submitted) was that I kept forgetting my heroine’s eye color. In one scene she gray and in other areas it was light or dark brown. When I went back to read through it I was like ‘OMG she’s got a rainbow in her sockets!’ It made me laugh and freak. I now wondered what else I didn’t realize was multi-color.
Another mistake I made was call her Sofia. Her name is Sophia. But the Latina in me kept changing it to Sofia. Don’t know why, but I had Sophia and Sofia all over the place. My sister noticed this one. She asked me if my heroine had multiple personalities. LOL. I asked why and she said because I kept referring to her in two different names.
And the last mistake I will admit to is leaving a big BLANK when I couldn’t remember what word I wanted to use. Then when I went through the story I found all these BLANK spots and had to try to figure out what the heck I was trying to say. LOL. It made for some interesting reading.

Book Review:

Well, all I can say is damn!  Hot, hot, hot!  This book is sexy and hot.  The storyline is entertaining and draws you in, the characters are sexy and the sex is hot.  I love shifter romances anyway and the added erotic elements just take it to the next level.

I give this book 4 out of 5 clouds and a chili pepper rating of 8.

Blurb :

Twelve short stories, all set in modern-day Knoxville, Tennessee, and each exploring the rhythms and currents of relationships, encounters, and the conflicts within characters themselves.  From the reality beneath the surface of a hotel manager's charm, to the sadly funny and complex clashes between a family on a holiday carriage ride, Beautiful Man and Other Stories probes the fascination of lives as shaped by Southern, and all too human, forces.

About the Author:

Jack has been writing professionally for fifteen years, with work ranging from a guide to Internet dating (from Simon & Schuster) to liner notes for Oscar and Grammy winner Carly Simon.  His first love, however, remains fiction, and of a very Southern kind.  Beautiful Man and Other Stories marks Jack's return to the form after ten years.

Shades of Gray
Book One
By L.M. Pruitt

Jude Magdalyn Henries lives what many would call an unconventional life.

Orphaned at birth, raised by nuns, a teenage runaway living on the streets... she now earns a living at odd jobs, including one as a fake tarot card reader. Very little about Jude's life appears normal, by any scale.

When she accepts a gig to do a private reading, unconventional takes on an entirely new meaning. Life as she knows it ends when she's thrust into a world she never knew existed-one filled with magic, vampires, and her beloved New Orleans on the verge of an underground war.

To make matters worse, she's got two men in her life vying for attention, Williams and Theo. Both call to a different part of her, but one scares her just a little bit.

Can she step up to the challenges set before her and make the right choices for the greatergreater good?

Shades of Desire

All I wanted was a little peace and quiet.

Instead, I've got dead Covenant members and a steady stream of letters from the new guy in town. His beverage of choice? A 2002 Merlot, with a shot or two of powerful virgin blood.

On top of that, I'm breaking in a new police liaison, failing at playing matchmaker, and fighting nausea like it's a full time job. All I wanted was a little peace and quiet.

Did I forget to mention that I've also got enough girls living at the Crossroads to start my own boarding school?

Peace and quiet? Out the window.

Shades of Blood
Book 3

If it's not one thing, it's another.

Felipe, one of New Orleans's most infamous—and crazy--vampires is back in town. And to say he's unhappy is an understatement.

Duprees and Williams have to track down Felipe, fast, before he claims any more victims. If that means making a deal with the Devil--otherwise known as St. Germaine--and using an untrained dhampir, so be it.

If that wasn't enough, I've also got rebellious teenagers, feuding couples, and a suddenly full social calendar.

The more things change....

About the Author:

L.M. Pruitt has been reading and writing for as long as she can remember. A native of Florida with a love of New Orleans, she has the uncanny ability to find humor in most things and would probably kill a plastic plant. She is the author of the Jude Magdalyn Series as well as New Moon Rising, featuring Cari Gravier, and Taken, featuring Frankie Post. She is currently at work on the next book in the Moon Rising series, Harvest Moon Rising, due out April 2012. Ms. Pruitt makes her home in Florida with two cats--one smart, the other not so much.

Excerpt:

Shades of Desire

“If someone doesn’t get me a lemon in the next five minutes, everyone will suffer. A lot.”
“Jude, I love you. Which is why I can say you’re being just a little overdramatic.” One look at my face and Theo changed his tune. “But then again, you could say pregnancy is dramatic and you’re just getting into the groove.”
“Nice save.” I tried to sit up again. Halfway through the upward movement greasy waves of nausea rolled over me and I eased back down onto the pillow. Strands of black hair clung to my sweaty face and I closed my eyes, exhaling slowly. “Not as nice as that lemon would be right now, but nice.”
“Elizabeth will be here in a moment. No doubt she’ll have a lemon. And tea. And toast.” Theo turned over to face me, laying one hand over my still mostly flat stomach. If you looked close, you could see the smallest of bumps.
I know, because I checked. Every other day or so.
If anybody told me three months ago, that the week before Halloween, I’d be lying in bed with a man who absolutely adored me—even the crazy parts—I’d have asked them what the hell they were smoking. If they’d thrown in being pregnant, I would have punched them in their jaw. Then gone to the store and bought a dozen pregnancy tests and prayed for them all to be negative.
But that was before the Covenant.
In two weeks, I’d gone from being an orphan raised by nuns, to the latest in a long line of only daughters. Women charged with the protection and well-being of hundreds of people with unique powers. Some made flame burn for hours, while others called the wind to knock you flat on your ass. They were a group of people who came together over two-hundred years ago, bound by a prophecy. One with no past, lost in the present, will bring in the future, through gifts of both this world and the next.
And lucky me, I’d passed the job interview.
I’d sent Hart to a muddy, watery grave-literally. Unless something went crazy wrong, he’d stay under the Mississippi until the Final Judgment. Williams ruled the vampires of the city now and kept his distance as much as possible.
And I, Jude Magdalyn Henries, led the Covenant. Maybe I wasn’t terrific at it. But Gillian would be proud.
All things considered, I think I came out with a pretty good deal.

Book Review:

The Covenant is a group in charge of keeping the supernatural world in working order.  The main character, Jude, finds out that the things that go bump in the night are really the things from nightmares in “Shades of Grey..  Jude is an orphan who makes a living doing odd jobs.  She has no family, was orphaned at birth, raised by nuns, lived on the streets as a teen-age runaway, and meets her first vampire when she is pretending to be a psychic.  Of course, she doesn’t initially know he’s a vampire, just that he scares her.

“Shades of Grey” is a taut, intense story about Jude finding out who she is, why she is, and who her family is.  “Shades of Desire” continues the story of Jude and her coming into power.  It gives more information about the Covenant, what it is and how it works.  It also explores the balance of power between the Covenant and the vampires in New Orleans.

“Shades of Blood” is a tense edgy continuation of the story of Jude.  Her pregnancy has progressed enough that it appears the “bumps,” as they call them, have developed their own personalities that are making themselves know.  A serial killer is targeting local vampires and she gets some news about the babies that causes tensions to rise.

L.M. Pruitt has written an intense series that has drama, humor, paranormal, heart, romance, and tons of action.  There is something here for everyone.  The fast paced read keeps you drawn into the story and the plot keeps you intrigued.  The characters make you care what happens to them, a true feat for any author.

I give this series 4.5 out of 5 clouds.

About the Author:

Olivia Hardin realized early on how strange she was to have complete movie-like character dreams as a child. Eventually she began putting those vivid dreams to paper and was rarely without her spiral notebooks full of those mental ramblings. Her forgotten vision of becoming an author was realized when she connected with a group of amazingly talented and fabulous writers who gave her lots of direction and encouragement.

With a little extra push from family and friends, she hunkered down to get lost in the words. She's also an insatiable crafter who only completes about 1 out of 5 projects, a jogger who hates to run, and is sometimes accused of being artistic, though she's generally too much of a perfectionist to appreciate her own work. A native Texas girl, Olivia lives in the beautiful Lone Star state with her husband and their puppy Bonnie.

Excerpt:

Prologue

Jill stood in what had become her bedroom in her friend's house and watched as Devan walked away. As she murmured another goodnight, she felt a prickle run along her skin bringing her attention back to the fact that Langston was waiting outside her room for her. Her lips drew into a severe line when the giant man quietly opened the door and approached her with steps too soft for his massive body. His size was such that he should have sounded like a herd of elephants entering the room. He exuded calm and patience and she tried to draw from his composure but her stomach still turned into knots.  Even being a vampire, Jill experienced all the same emotions and feelings she’d had before she was changed. At this very moment she was both terrified and sickened.

Langston’s easy smile didn’t help soothe her any, but instead caused her to open her mouth and begin talking in short breaths. “I wish we had more time. I wasn’t prepared to do this yet. I don’t like doing this at all, you know? It’s not right. It makes me feel dirty…”

“It is not dirty when it is consensual. It is the best way to prepare you. We do not have time now, and we all need the rest,” Langston began to use his large hands to unbutton his grey shirt.

Horrified, Jill reached out and waved her hands to keep him from removing   his clothing any further. “No,” Jill shouted, “I can take just as well from your wrist. I can’t… I can’t from your neck. That’s too intimate… you know?”

He touched her chin in a gentle manner, not as a lover would do but more as a father might. “Shoulders back, Jill. Tomorrow you will be free, no matter if you succeed in your quest or not.”

It was an ominous sort of comment, because failure meant her death. Still, strange as it seemed, his words provided her with a sort of solace; an end to her life would at least stop her constant torment. Releasing the ball of tension in her gut, she laughed and shook her head. “Ah, Andre, you’re something else, ya’ know that?”

He showed little or no reaction to the pet name.  There was no denying the impressive stature of this tall and beefy guy. When they first met she’d thought instantly of Andre the Giant, and the name had just stuck in her mind.

She took his enormous hand in her small one, marveling at how warm he felt to her touch. As a vampire, her body was forever cold and although she could register the feeling, she couldn’t warm herself with it. The heat passed through her and disappeared just as quickly.

“The reverie,” she whispered, her lips trembling as she hovered them just over his skin. “Are you sure? There’s no reason not to. It isn’t right for you to feel pain for my benefit…” she trailed off as she felt his eyes bore into hers. They had discussed this, several times actually, since the moment he first suggested she should feed off his blood. Each time he refused the reverie which would hypnotize him and thereby allowing her to pierce his skin and suck his blood without pain.

Jill brought his wrist to her lips and closed her eyes. She willed her incisors to lengthen, and with a quick and sure thrust she dug them into his skin. Langston remained immobile. When the first metallic taste of his hot blood splashed her tongue, she tried to pull away, but he took the back of her neck and held her fast to his wrist. Giving in, she sagged against his side and began to suck like a hungry babe.

The taste of him was intoxicating. She hadn’t had fresh blood in such a long time. She was like an addict taking a hit after years of sobriety. And to complicate matters further, Langston’s blood was bursting with strength. His magic tingling her throat with each deep swallow of the luxuriously thick and decadent liquid. Her limbs began to throb and pulse with energy.

This was why she’d fought so hard against the idea of taking Langston's blood. She was afraid that getting just a taste of the real thing again would destroy her ability to resist in the future. She didn’t want to stalk hosts in the night and she didn’t want to take a supplicant; she didn’t want to drink the life-blood from a living creature again.

Most importantly of all, she didn’t want to remember that this was what had broken his will. She didn’t want to take the chance again that someone else would break her own will and give her a reason to forget him…

Excerpt 4

Doc didn’t say anything, but nodded, placing his hands behind his back to keep himself from reaching for her again. He watched her move back to the chair she’d occupied earlier. She plopped down and folded her legs Indian-style.

“Can you see your reflection?”

He rolled his eyes, annoyed. “Yes.”

“Stakes?”

“Deadly.”

“Silver bullets?”

“Those too.”

“Um…” she bit her lip and looked up at the ceiling. “Do you hibernate during the day?”

“I don’t hibernate. I usually sleep during the day, yes. But it’s just sleep, the same as you do during the evening.”

“Coffin or bed?”

He sighed, “Bed.”

Thank goodness she thought, then giggled, “And do you eat? Food, I mean?”

“I’d become sick. I can’t digest it. I can, however, drink virtually anything without issue.”

“Can you fly?”

He shook his head and she dropped hers in disappointment.

“Turn into a bat?”

“Jill!” his exasperation level rising.

Jill cocked her right eyebrow up and looked him dead on. “How old are you, Doc?”

The vampire’s expression turned serious. “Old enough.”

Book Review:

Loooved it!  Such a fun story.  I didn’t read book 1 in the series, so it can obviously be read alone without reading book 1 in the series.  The story was funny, cute, sad, sweet, oh and did I mention funny?  I especially loved the whole “Here, it is, what is,” component where inner self is revealed.  Love the weasel.

I give this story 5 out of 5 clouds.
